Environmental Education for School Children
CHSPIA and Inside the Outdoors has provided watershed education to over 1,000 school children over the last 2 years, and in some cases this was their only field trip of the year due to cost considerations. The children learn through hands-on activities that water quality is important to their lives and the natural world around them. They also learn how their actions affect that watershed. This program includes content that meets state science curriculum standards and leads to improved stewardship of the watershed. The cost of providing this program is approximately $25 per child.
It has been our experience that having positive
outdoor experiences as a child leads to an appreciation and understanding of
nature as an adult. Our goal is to
create these positive first experiences in a Park that, given its proximity to
urban areas, children and their families can then later enjoy outside of the
classroom.Currently, very few children
of North Orange County experience or understand the richness of the protected
hills and canyons that are part of the community they live in.
Visitor Experience
To be able to provide an enjoyable visitor experience to the Park, we are looking at the following efforts: - Visitor Counter system to be able to identify the volume of visitors and where they are entering the Park - Trail Signs - purchase and install trail identification and direction signs on the over 90 miles of trails.
The long term success of this program will be measured by the lack of volunteer trails and trailheads. In addition, funding decisions at the State level will be made that properly funds the park based on its documented volume of usage.
