Background Statement

In 1992 nine families from the Walnut Valley Unified School District came together to form the Council of African American Parents (CAAP) out of a need to leverage resources, information and programming that would supplement their children’s school experience. 33 years later, our board is comprised of a range of business professionals that organize and implement fundraising, academic programming through partnerships with colleges and universities throughout Southern California.

Impact Statement

In our 33 year history over 6,0000 students have come through the CAAP programs and have gone on to Medical, Engineering, Law and impressive Graduate programs across the country and abroad. The Reading Circle Legacy Mathematics Program, PALS and JSW enrichment programs have contributed to the advancement and success of our CAAP scholars.

Needs Statement

Shrinking enrollment of underrepresented students at public colleges and universities, has intensified our efforts to proactively prepare our students to compete for seas at institutions of higher learning throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to deserving scholars throughout the region. More importantly, we are actively working to ensure that all of our scholars make a seamless transition from elementary to middle school, from middle school to high school, from high school to college, from college to graduate school and from graduate and professional schools to careers that will afford them the opportunity to make a difference for those who follow. We emphasize returning to our communities to “pay forward” for help received from volunteer mentors; it is a pleasure to have or graduates involved in college preparation programs upon their return to the community.
