PROGRAMS

Museum on the Move (Mobile Museum program)

Our Mobile Museum travels to schools in North Orange County to provide students in under-resourced schools with interactive STEM lessons and science projects in their own backyard. Our museum staff set-up stations including critter connect, incredible insects, H20 on the go, and other activities where students learn through art, experiments and hands-on play. At the end of the lesson, teachers are provided supplemental materials so that learning continues beyond their time visiting the mobile museum. The benefit of the mobile museum is that we can bring interactive learning opportunities to students who may never have the opportunity to visit the Children's museum and it is more cost effective for schools to fund than a field trip. For many schools, it is more cost effective to bring the mobile museum to their school vs. a field to the Children's museum.

Budget
$25,000
Outcomes

Our goal is to visit 10 elementary schools in North Orange County to provide an estimated 1,000 local students with an interactive STEM experience through our mobile museum.

¥ Student outcomes include increased development of STEM skills, the increased use of age-appropriate STEM vocabulary terms in everyday learning activities, positive response to the STEM learning environment and improved STEM communication through conversations and discussions with their teachers.

¥ Teacher outcomes include increased early childhood teaching quality in support of children’s STEM learning, improved instructional support, improved strategies for teaching STEM and the development of class activities that support children’s STEM development.

¥ Parent outcomes include increased belief in the importance of STEM and the increased ability to support their child’s STEM learning.

Sensory Sensitive Sundays

Sensory Sensitive Sundays provide modified exhibits and activities for children with children with special needs once a month. During Sensory Sundays, portions of our exhibits (Loud noises, flashing lights, moving dinosaurs, etc.) are turned off so that children are not overwhelmed or over-stimulated. There is also a reduced admission cost on Sensory Sunday so that more families can participate.

Budget
$20,000
Outcomes

Our goal is to increase the number of children who attend Sensory Sundays over the next year through promotion to medical professionals, educators, and parents groups in our community that work alongside this population. We are also promoting the events through the Museum's website and e-blasts, social media, and word-of-mouth.  Community agencies that offer resources will have regular Sensory Sensitive Sunday program participation when the program is offered more frequently.
