PROGRAMS

Family Arts Day

Held annually in October, Family Arts Day (FAD) features a variety of free art workshops taught by professional artists, including ceramics, painting, sculpture, collage, and performances. This free, intergenerational program invites parents and grandparents and children of all ages to create together. Past events have seen up to 1,000 guests. FAD is held in conjunction with the opening of a contemporary art exhibition which provides the opportunity for families to experience the exhibition with guided, inquiry-based tours.

Outcomes

This program offers an entire day of free family friendly activities taught by local teaching artists. Families can explore the arts with their children at no cost. This popular, annual program embodies HBAC's depth of commitment to the needs, interests, and well being of the community by increasing arts access and participation. This program also demonstrates HBAC's open door policy, capacity to engage with the neighborhood, and the ability to provide impactful arts programming to children of all ages.

Summer Art Camp

A summer camp for children ages 6-12, the program offers four themed weeks of art activities taught by professional artists, structured in half and full day sessions. A variety of visual and performing arts and recreation activities are explored every week. We want to provide opportunities to children of financially challenged families to attend Summer Art Camp by offering scholarships for qualifying families.

Through creative play and exploration, young minds develop creative thinking skills that can be applied to all aspects of their lives; while also building strong relationships with local families and learning that art is for everyone.

Partners in Art

A partnership program with Huntington Beach City and Ocean View School Districts, the Partners in Art provides elementary school students with art engagement opportunities. Young learners experience docent-led, inquiry-based exhibition tours, followed by artmaking activities taught by teaching artists and aligned with the California Core Standards curriculum.

Informal learning in art environments helps build social skills, language learning, critical thinking, and resilience in young learners. Youth arts participation is also a predictor of academic and future success. To build lasting partnerships with local school districts and the Art Center. Exhibitions Program

HBAC yearly exhibition program consists of four community-based art exhibitions and four curated, contemporary exhibitions. Community exhibitions include Creative Visions, showcasing artwork by students from Huntington Beach school district; Centered on the Center, an open call, non-juried exhibition that attracts over 200 artists from all over California; Inspired, featuring the HBAC Artist Council Members; and Surf City ART, a biennial exhibition celebrating Surf City's creative culture. Recent examples of contemporary exhibitions include Observations: Photography By Veterans; Rasquachismo, celebrating the art of Chicano and lowrider culture; By Degrees, which explored the impact of climate change; and Surreal 100, celebrating the 100th birthday of surrealism..

Our exhibitions solidify HBAC as a location for creating and exploring art - encouraging people of all ages to engage with and learn about other perspectives through diverse exhibitions.
