KidSingers

As a grass-roots children's charity, KidSingers innovatively responded to budget cuts in public school arts programs in Orange County, CA. In 1997 veteran choral conductor Paul McNeff founded KidSingers as an after-school choral music program for low-income, at-risk kids. Targeting youth, ages 8 -- 18 from all 42 schools within the SASUD and additional school districts (Tustin, Orange, Garden Grove, Anaheim), KidSingers' teaches kids how to sing and perform and become better citizens. With an annual enrollment of more than 100 kids, this award-winning program has lifted thousands of kids from the streets to the heights of self-respect and hope. KidSingers concertizes at venues such as Angel Stadium and Disneyland and were featured on ABC TV's Good Morning America. KidSingers consists of 5 choirs: KidSingers "Concert Choir" - all KidSingers grades 3 - 12; "ACT 1" - new incoming KidSingers; "ACT 2" - returning KidSingers grades 4 - 7; "ACT 3" - returning KidSingers grades 8 - 12; "MasterClass" - advanced KidSingers in grades 7 - 12.

Outcomes

Since 1997, the award-winning KidSingers after-school program has provided nearly 2,200 at-risk kids with a highly disciplined, performing arts program. With an annual enrollment averaging 80 youth in grades 3 through 12, they will all participate in our 2025-2026 season. KidSingers' mission is to provide multicultural youth with quality choral/vocal music education and performance opportunities that not only culminate with dynamic concerts, but also produce outcomes of building self-esteem, and confidence. We recognize that the musical arts have tremendous efficacy to re-humanize today’s youth who are all equally plagued by social isolation and gun violence, magnified by social media, AI, and the lack of human connection. Our goal is to raise confident, respectful citizens, and leaders capable of contributing constructively to an increasingly volatile, uncertain, and complex world. A total of five ensembles participate in at least five rehearsals per week, which take place on Tuesdays during the after-school hours between 3:45 and 7:30 pm. Not only do we provide several high-profile performance opportunities, but a core part of youth development occurs every week at rehearsals, where we not only sing together but appoint youth section leaders to help fellow students learn their music. Every incentive is based on earned merit, including weekly Singing Stars who are not just awarded for musical acumen but also for collaboration, citizenship, and leading by example.
