LEAP Reading Intervention Program

LEAP is continuing its commitment during the 2023-2024 school year to restore and rebuild the severe learning losses that our student population suffered during school closures and other ramifications of the COVID--19 Pandemic. Upon return to in-person learning, we increased the number of students served from 132 to 160 program-wide, 40 at each of our Title I school sites in the Tustin Unified School District: Beswick, Estock, Heideman, and Nelson Elementary Schools. Credentialed Teachers serving as Supervisors at each site are joined by paid post-graduate and volunteer tutors to provide research-based literacy instruction that is targeted to meet the needs of each student. Tutors meet with the same small group of students for the entire school year as we know how important consistency is for our students. We realize that recovering from this pandemic will be long and difficult for students and their families. But we also know students are resilient and will prevail with the proper support. To be eligible for our program, students must be identified by their K-5 teachers as reading significantly below grade level. LEAP students will be divided into reading groups of no more than five so we can target and individualize reading instruction based on each student's needs. Knowing that literacy skills are best taught within the context of reading authentic fiction and non-fiction text, instead of focusing on isolated skills or worksheets, a significant portion of each session will be spent reading and responding in discussions that promote a deeper level of comprehension.

Outcomes

Our vision is to break the perpetual cycle of illiteracy and poverty by developing attitudes and behaviors that promote success in school, instill a strong work ethic, and create new paths for a bright and promising future. Our long-term goal is for 100% of LEAP students to finish high school at a minimum and ideally go on to pursue higher education.
