PROGRAMS
Elementary Program
PHA provides educational support to children, grades K-6, experiencing homelessness, which struggle with low academic achievement, typically in literacy and math. PHA utilizes an innovative, multilingual curriculum that is highly adaptive to each child’s unique needs and levels of understanding. PHA also coordinates with the child’s teacher and pairs each child with a trained volunteer mentor to foster strong relationships and healthy social-emotional development. Our case managers provide students with a Chromebook as well as assess basic needs deficits and provide them with food, clothing and hygiene supplies.
In the long term, students will progress toward their own grade level, and achieve the standard levels set out by the state. Aside from academics, we also work with the students to help them acquire needed social and emotional skills in dealing with everyday life support structures.
Middle and High School Program:
PHA provides multi-faceted support for youth experiencing homelessness, grades 7-12, using a unique place-based strategy to foster meaningful interactions between students and case managers throughout the school day. Students enrolled in the program have regularly scheduled (as well as many informal) meetings with the case manager to address their basic needs, social-emotional development, academic achievement, and planning for stability in their post-graduation life. Activities of the program include regular meetings between students and case managers to set and work on academic, post-graduate, and personal goals and assess changes in the student’s individual needs. Our on-site offices are stocked with healthy snacks, clothing, and hygiene items. We offer numerous enrichment activities for the students, including summer camps, recreational outings, and college campus tours. Additional services for high school students include assistance in completing high school and college, financial assistance, and employment applications. Our case managers also improve students’ communication with leadership and teachers by attending student-teacher meetings and facilitating collaboration between the teacher and student. Case managers are available 24/7 to address unexpected and urgent needs.
Case Managers look for academic improvement (increase in GPA) over a student’s time in the program. The emphasis of the case manager's work is to connect youth to a broad set of services in the community, reduce absenteeism, reduce behavioral issues in the school, and improve academic success. They also track development in personal areas of the student’s life and achievement of their goals, such as college completion, and in social and behavioral health improvements.
Post High-School Program
This program serves youth who have graduated from high school graduation between 18 years to age 24. Our post-high school youth are spread across 2- and 4-year colleges, trade schools, and job sites. Our roving case manager assists young adults in creating a care plan that emphasizes financial stability and direction in their personal and professional life. Our goals are to minimize disruptions in the students’ academic path, facilitate their completion of college, and acquisition of housing and full-time employment. In addition, the case manager steers opportunities and resources to each student, such as scholarships, internships, as well as mentoring, basic needs support, and individual goal setting. Case management meetings are held online, in local coffee houses, on college campuses, or anywhere that minimizes the travel time for the youth.
80% of our high school seniors graduated, compared to 69% of homeless high school youth nationally.
