Needs Based Scholarships for Transformation
We continue to see the need for financial assistance increase. As a result of the pandemic, we saw an increase in families requesting financial assistance/scholarship support. For the four years prior to the pandemic, we provided tuition assistance to about 20% of our student population. Every year, our scholarship assistance averages between 20% and 60% of total tuition. We regularly encounter low-income families whose child is not successful in the traditional classroom and would benefit from the individualized teaching strategies employed at Prentice. Seeking donations toward our Need-Based Scholarships for Transformation Initiative is an ongoing effort each year. We continue to raise support from individuals, foundations, and corporations through our Annual Giving Campaign and grant proposals. In addition, we raise over $150,000 each year at our annual gala event for student scholarships. The more funds we raise for this program directly translate to more scholarship assistance awarded. This year we hope to increase the total amount of scholarship awards by 10% to $475,000
Support for this program helps to ensure that we do not have to turn any student away who is in need of a Prentice education.
As stated above, the more funds we raise for Needs Based Scholarships for Transformation directly translates to more scholarship assistance awarded.
Professional Development
Professional Development funds support the annual training needs of all faculty to ensure an optimal learning environment for our entire student body. Support for Professional Development will allow us to continue to train and certify our teachers in the Orton-Gillingham Approach for literacy and learning. Orton-Gillingham (OG) Structured Literacy Training ($10,000): It is the goal of The Prentice School to have every teacher certified through the Dyslexia Training Institute (DTI) in order to be able to provide OG instruction to our students. This program is designed on quality evidence-based research and consists of coursework and a practicum experience that gives an in-depth study of Dyslexia and how to effectively implement the OG Approach, along with reading comprehension and fluency development. Funds would cover training for five (5) full-time teaching staff to complete the training and receive certification through a practicum course. RULER Training ($6,000): It is the goal of The Prentice School to implement the RULER Method in the 2023-2024 school year. RULER is a systemic approach, developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to Social Emotional Learning developed at the Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER aims to infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into the immune system of schools (preK-12), informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn, and families support students. Funds will cover training for 3 staff to complete their training and receive certification to implement the methodology at our school the following year.
Support for Professional Development will allow us to continue teacher certification through the Dyslexia Training Institute so that all Prentice teachers are trained and certified to support all aspects of educating our students. It will also allow us to send 3 staff to complete the RULER Method Training at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
