I Am a Super Kid Empowerment Global Launch
Preventing sexual abuse will have a profound impact on the world. Often sexual trauma dramatically affects people’s physical and emotional health. In preventing this crime through education, more people can achieve lifelong health and wellbeing. Our goal at AQB is to create the conditions for strong, thriving families and communities where children and youth are free from harm. “I Am A Super Kid: An Age-Appropriate Guide to Empower Three to Seven Year-Olds in Protecting Their Bodies” speaks to preschool and early elementary children. It is a colorful English-Spanish book which opens the doors for children not to allow people to touch or photograph their private parts. In addition, they are empowered to shout out, “STOP!” and run and tell an adult. The main character asks other kids what a super kid is. The kids share various ways a child can be a super kid. The child shares that private parts are under a bathing suit. The bathing suit is red. The child shares red means stop; and if anyone tries to photograph or touch private parts a child must run and tell and adult, until an adult believes. An insert gives greater details for parents to reinforce these lessons, such as, practicing shout out stop, and running and telling a trusted adult. This resource is currently available as a free download in both English and Spanish. Since AQB is determined to develop safer and healthier communities throughout the world, it wants to grow its impact to protect more children from the trauma of sexual abuse through multi-lingual versions of I Am A Super Kid. In the development process, AQB wants to assure that I Am A Super Kid is culturally relevant and appropriate for children of a multitude of languages and cultures. AQB wants to create a cartoon version of "I Am A Super Kid." This cartoon can be watched by kids online. This version will also be developed into a downloadable version for kids, where children or parents can create an avatar. In this version children become heroes of their own story as the super kids who protect their private parts. A recent study by Common Sense Media found that many children now spend more than triple the amount of time engaged with screen media than they do with books. The study also showed that 53 percent of all children have access to a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet computer, with 20 percent of all parents having downloaded apps specifically for their children to use. While we wish there were more human interaction and relationship building, AQB wants to capitalize on this trend. AQB will also develop an "I Am A Super Kid Affirmation and Empowerment Kit." This kit will include a cape with badges kids can earn as they develop healthy coping strategies and emotional responses. This curriculum will be marketed to parents, schools, and therapists as a means to develop healthy children. This curriculum is based in affirmations and play.
