PROGRAMS
Camps
Surf camp is a weekly event throughout July. We transport kids to the beach, teach them surfing and water safety, provide lunch, and a Bible study at the beach. At the end of the month, we take participants to a 2 night / 3 day camping trip in Malibu, which includes surfing, hiking, games, camping experiences, Gospel-centered programming, and relationship development. Winter camp is an annual 2-night trip to Big Bear. Winter camp is an extension of our weekly Bible study programs, where kids get to join with their group and experience snow and mountain activities together.
About fifty kids participate each summer and about 30 in the winter. These camp experiences help kids develop a sense of community and accomplishments. Oftentimes, these camps are the first opportunity they will have to experience the ocean or snow. They have become valued events for parents in the Oakview community who otherwise might not have an opportunity to give their children a summer vacation or camp experience.
After-school clubs
Common Ground hosts weekly activities known as "clubs". Currently, this includes Soccer Club with professional coaches, Cooking Club with a new menu each week, Homework Club, where mentors assist kids with their studies, and Adventure Club, a trip to local beach and outdoor destinations.
About 50 kids participate in our various clubs. This provides them something to do after school - often when parents are working. It also gives them access to mentoring relationships with our leaders.
Outreaches
Common Ground hosts several different types of events that bring together people from the Oakview community and the broader city of Huntington Beach. For example, we host the Common Ground Market at BeachPoint Church. The Market brings a wide range of food vendors together in one place and invites church members and supports to enjoy dinner and fun activities. Our annual Surf Contest brings together supporters, kids from our programs, and surf contest participants for a day that features great competition and games. Noche de Cine is a regular event in the community that brings families together for an outdoor movie night on the big screen.
Combined participation in our outreach events is about 500 people a year. These events provide income for vendors, visibility into the community for supporters and friends, fun and free activities for Oakview families, and an opportunity for kids in our program to serve.
