Sports and Recreation: Triple Play

The Boys & Girls Club of Stanton offers array of effective sports, fitness and recreation programs to equip Club members with crucial skills needed to become healthy, fit and successful adults. Our programs consciously incorporates elements of belonging, competence, usefulness and influence. Each day there is drop in daily physical fun in sports and fitness. Members enjoy our soccer, basketball, and volleyball clinics. Triple Play promotes fun with a purpose, physical fitness and skill acquisition year-round in a non-competitive, yet challenging environment for boys and girls of all ability levels. Daily fitness challenges give youth at every age the chance to play longer and harder at different games — from jumping rope to basketball to creating games of their own. Sports Clubs and inter-Club competitions in multiple team sports help keep interest high among Club members. Sports leagues are offered in basketball, soccer and volleyball.

The goals of Triple Play are to:
• Encourage and provide youth an opportunity for fun.
• Encourage achievement, cooperation and sportsmanship.
• Teach members rules related to equipment, facilities and games and behavior.
• Provide members an opportunity for spontaneous, informal, competitive and creative play.
• Help members develop self-confidence.

Learning Center

The Learning Center of the Boys & Girls Club of Stanton is a place where Club members can gain added academic support, homework help, tutoring and academic enrichment to maintain and improve their school performance. More, specifically, the Learning Center offers readiness skills: 1. Academic support such as one-on-one homework tutoring, older youth mentoring, computer skills, a reading club, math stumpers, wizard writing fun, spelling bees, General Education Development Program, life skills, fun educational games, and Discover English; 2. Daily help with homework by staff and older youth. Over 140 students use the Learning Center two to three times a week, 25 teens use it each day and another 45 use it two days per week. In addition, 200+ Club members use it for completing homework.

1. Provide the skills students need to prepare for a successful future in today’s technological workforce.
2. Provide academic parity, so students can reach their potential and be all they want to be.
3. Achieve on-time grade progression (measured through report cards).
4. Report positively about their Club experience (the National Outcomes Survey data is taken at the beginning and end of the school year).
5. Graduate from high school (measured by date of graduation).
6. Become enthusiastic learners.
7. Learn how to problem-solve.

Teen Center

The Club operates a Teen Center for teens 7th grade and up. Teens can receive homework help, learn how to fill out job/college applications and hang out with friends. There is a big screen TV, new computers and game consoles. All of the teen programs encourage them to consider college, complete homework accurately and on-time, learn about the rewards of volunteerism, develop computer skills, discover that “character counts,” work together as a team, and become a mentor to younger members.  Two key programs are: 1. Career Launch - a Career Exploration and Mentoring Program that helps prepare teens for the working world by setting goals and exploring careers 2. Money Matters which teaches youth how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. Youth also learn about starting a small business and paying for college.

Teens who participate in Career Launch and Money Matters will: 
• Acquire greater knowledge of possible careers and the role of education in success
• Acquire basic money management skills• Develop needed skills and increase knowledge of how to find and hold jobs
• Acquire the basic skills needed to start a small business.
• Start and maintain employment, gaining experience and expanding work and interpersonal skills. 

Youth Development Programming

Since its founding in 1975, our Club has focused on students who are disadvantaged and do not have the same opportunities as other students from more affluent communities. In 2022, we served 721 individuals through programs including arts and crafts; the Kids Café (a free nutritional program); the Teen Center; SMART Moves (exposes youth to positive influences); the Learning Center; athletics, health and fitness classes. We served an additional 2,500 youth through Saturday programs. The Club is open Monday through Friday, after school from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., during holidays and Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. during summer vacation. Other programs and events provided by the Club: · College Bound (teens research all about a college of their choosing; followed by a pizza party) · “Lights on Afterschool” event for the families of members (includes games and dinner) · SMART Moves teaches kids and teens how to establish positive relationships and healthy habits · Brain Gain – a national reading program to keep members on track during the summer · Field trips, summer program, choir · Kids Café (free meal program) · Sports programs and leagues

How is it that 90% of our members who attend the Boys & Girls Club of Stanton weekly have been promoted to the next grade level since the Learning Center opened 44 years ago?
