We've Got Your Back

A hungry child cannot focus in school. They struggle to perform in the classroom, consistently scoring lower than their peers. In order to ensure that food-insecure children in Southern California have the nutritious food they need to grow, learn and thrive, the We’ve Got Your Back (WGYB) partners with over 75 local schools to distribute nutritious food and basic needs resources. Schools approach us because they have children who are food insecure, unstably housed, and are low-income. In addition to receiving food, we support families by increasing parent engagement through volunteering and education classes in financial literacy, health & wellness, and parenting. This stresses the importance of maintaining a balanced budget and diet while facing food insecurity.

Budget
$421,000
Outcomes

1. Prevent hunger for 1,000 vulnerable children

2. Distribute basic need supplies such as bedding or heaters to program participants in need

3. Increase parent participation, knowledge, and confidence through education classes

Welcome Home

Our Welcome Home Packages are aimed at filling a gap in housing services. Housing nonprofits are able to find places to live for housing-unstable families but don't have the resources to fill the home. They use a limited budget to purchase used items. This meets their needs but doesn't offer a struggling family the 'home-sweet-home' feel that helps lead to long-term housing. We offer a solution to this by providing everything that is needed to move into a new household: dishware, furniture, beds, hygiene supplies, and more. The family doesn't need to pay anything and we'll provide the items and move it in with help from our volunteer-base. We supply these items through our long-term partnerships with retailers who donate supplies from their stores each month. This allows us to provide $12,000+ worth of household items for less than half the price.

Budget
$220,000
Outcomes

1. Provide 12 housing unstable households with everything they need to move into a new home

2. Divert items from going to the landfill by taking in excess inventory from businesses and finding partners who can use it to benefit children and families in need.

Leadership & Development

At GCH, we first make sure vulnerable families get the resources they need to escape survival mode, then we dive deeper with them by offering self-development opportunities in our Leadership & Development classes. Here, we welcome parents, a majority of whom are Hispanic/Latino and have not completed high school, to learn, grow and transform their life. Parents who enroll in these classes join cohorts that develop functional skills in financial literacy, parenting, nutrition, and more. They attend classes on a weekly basis throughout the year. In these classes, we don’t want families to learn new knowledge without knowing how to put it into practice. Instead, we focus on building habits that lead to practical outcomes such as creating monthly budgets and setting financial goals. Learning to build habits is a transformational tool that parents can use to impact other areas of their lives such as work or at home.

Budget
$75,000
Outcomes

1. 40 parents will receive education in Leadership, Financial Literacy, and Nutrition across 18 week classes in three separate cohorts.
2. Parents will grow as community leaders and demonstrate this by planning and executing two cultural events that bring in 250+ community members.
