Community Classes: ESL & Citizenship
Our community classes program consists of our English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizenship classes. Our ESL classes provide students the opportunity to learn basic English literacy skills including speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammar. By developing these skills, our students can utilize English throughout their daily activities and connect with other community members. Hope’s citizenship classes help students prepare and study for the 100 civics questions in the citizenship exam, as well as learning to read, recognize and write the vocabulary required in the reading and dictation portions of the citizenship interview. Both of our classes occur from Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and charge a monthly fee of $20.
Students in the ESL classes develop English literacy skills that are utilized throughout their daily activities and improve their communication with their English-speaking community members. Students enrolled in the citizenship class are provided the resources necessary for the citizenship exam as well as be able to practice and utilize their English skills. Students also have first hand experience in experiencing mock interviews for the interview portion of the exam. Having the necessary resources gives students the confidence to pass their exam and become American citizens.
Wellness Programs: Tai Chi, Food Pantry, Community Haircuts
Our wellness program consists of our tai chi classes, food pantry distribution, and community haircuts. All of our wellness programs are free. Tai Chi: Our Tai Chi classes offer students a graceful exercise to improve muscle strength, flexibility, and balance as well as the opportunity to build connections with other members through a social program. The aim of the classes is to promote mental, physical, and spiritual health. Classes are held in the morning from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM with instructors to lead the classes in the exercises. Food Pantry: Hope’s food pantry is open for low-income individuals, families, and seniors to combat food insecurity. The program strives to end hunger in Orange County for the Asian American population by providing culturally appropriate quality groceries every month to fulfill basic nutritional needs. Our food distribution happens every 3rd Sunday of the month. It is a free program; participants only need to register. Community Haircuts: Hope Community Service provides free professional haircuts for low-income adults and seniors to increase accessibility for our seniors, maintain personal hygiene, and improve self-esteem. Our haircuts occur on a first-come-first-serve basis and happen every third Monday of each month.
Tai Chi: Our Tai Chi classes serve as a community building program where students are able to connect with fellow community members all while improving their physical strength with the Tai Chi routines. Students also gain the opportunity to improve their spirituality as well.
Food Pantry: Our food pantry relieves social burden from food insecurity and improves our community members' quality of life. Those registered in our food pantry no longer have to worry about food insecurity as well as finding culturally appropriate groceries to fulfill their cultural diets.
Community Haircuts: Our free community haircuts aid our seniors in maintaining their hygiene and personal care. When our seniors are done with their haircuts, they feel empowered in themselves as well happy they are able to reach an accessible area that can provide them resources in taking care of themselves.
Hope Summer School
Hope’s Summer School Program has been running for 20 years to educate students from K to 8th Grade with an emphasis on academic education, character building, spirituality, art and cultural appreciation, and overall wellness. Students receive quality education from our certified teachers and staff members to teach them how to be well rounded individuals and learn more about Vietnamese cultures through team building activities.
Students within the Hope Summer School program are prepared for the upcoming school year through academic lessons from our certified teachers. Students are also able to gain cultural experiences stemming from Vietnamese cultural lessons, academic field trips, and team bonding activities.
Community Workshops
Hope’s Community Workshops are offered for free by professional experts from partnerships with local doctor offices, hospital outreach programs, and health insurance companies. The workshops aim to educate Vietnamese-Americans and improve their overall wellness, including, but not limited to mental, physical, and spiritual health. Our workshop happens every third Friday of the month.
Participants in the workshop are able to learn a variety of topics used to better their daily lifestyle and improve their quality of life. Participants also gain access to more health resources when they attend our workshop series.
