Public Media promotes a love of learning and helps communities, so that those living in them may have a fulfilling life in a strong, inclusive, informed society. At PBS SoCal, our high-quality content is at the core of everything we do. And we amplify its power through engagement in the community, as well as partnerships with significant educational, arts and cultural institutions across the region.
Community Engagement
We engage the community in an effort to address educational gaps – including kindergarten preparedness, 3rd grade reading levels, and high school dropout rates. Our educational content and outreach programs help prepare millions of children for success from cradle to career.
Across Southern California, PBS SoCal uses our proven engagement models to reach more people and provide educational experiences for all ages, tailored specifically to serve the diverse people of the region. We build upon our work by creating experiences for audiences with that explore science, history, nature, and the many subjects we address in our television programming and online content. And we broaden our reach to people wherever they are—online, over the air in their living rooms, or right in their neighborhoods.
Our Events Resource Library provides direct community access to our original content and resources. This free digital library gives organizations the tools they need to host a successful screening in their community by providing customizable invitations, downloadable episodes, post-screening discussion questions and activities to engage the audience. We seek to share local stories with communities across Southern California and foster a dialogue to increase understanding, build a sense of belonging, and connect people to each other and to their world.
Social Impact
Our expertise in mass media provides us with a unique opportunity to use multi-platform social impact initiatives as a means to engage our community in conversations about the issues facing our society. One such initiative – To Foster Change – employs rich content to provide insight and inspire discussion about the challenges faced by our region’s foster youth. We convene community leaders to share what’s working, explore new ideas, and ultimately find new solutions. And in partnership with organizations engaged in the foster care community, we engage with transition age foster youth, helping mentor and train them for media careers, and providing them with a platform to share their stories and pursue their dreams.
Community Partnerships
Significant institutions serve Southern California and provide a wide range of valuable services that improve our community.
Over the years, PBS SoCal has developed artistic, cultural and educational community engagement initiatives – thanks in large part to the partnerships we’ve developed. Cultural institutions like the Music Center, the Huntington Library, the Natural History Museum, LA Opera, The Getty Museum, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, USC and UCLA have partnered with us to expand the availability of cultural experiences across the region. And community partners like LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, local Boys & Girls Clubs, First Five California and K-12 schools across the region have joined us to bring critical educational experiences to neighborhoods across our community.
A trusted public media partner, PBS SoCal works with diverse organizations on topics of regional importance to spark dialogue and cultivate collaboration. These partnerships will continue to be critical in the future, as we work together to find new ways to serve all the communities across this region.
Community Engagement & Impact
At PBS SoCal, we believe in media for the public good, and aim to connect the stories we share with the community in thoughtful ways. We create opportunities for connection and conversation by sharing our shows and programming with audiences across the region. Whether through screenings, experiences, convenings, trainings, or educational resources, PBS SoCal finds ways to spark conversation and energize the mind, body and souls of our audiences, hopefully inspiring them to be active participants in their own communities.
We also believe that, as the primary PBS station for the country’s entertainment center, we have the unique opportunity to provide training and experience to the next generation of media-makers, as well as to those who face barriers to entry to media careers.
Our work is made stronger through partnerships. We collaborate with a wide range of partners—everyone from community organizations, thought leaders, cultural and educational institutions, and peer-based organizations to deepen the impact of our work and make sure our programming reflects and is valuable to the vast array of communities we serve.
