CEO/Executive Director Experience
PJ holds three degrees; in communications, film, and an MBA. She has 25 years of marketing and business experience in Fortune 500 companies and has operated her own consulting company and has won awards and accolades in business. PJ's experiences with animals involved learning to care for her own menagerie of pets, including a dogs, cats, horses, and other animals. Her first rescue at age 10 was when she brought home a box of cats from school. In 2011, she started networking dogs that were going to be euthanized. PJ was hooked! She transported animals from the shelter. PJ tried to volunteer with rescues but got no response. PJ adopted her first "Pitbull" and learned how misunderstood the breed was. She learned that dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages need help. The situation in our shelters is overwhelming. PJ loves animals and wanted to help them. In 2011, she founded The Little Red Dog to pay homage to the little red Pitbull that was beaten to death because she didn’t want to fight in Michael Vick’s dog ring. PJ decided to focus on the dogs as her customer and running the rescue as a business with KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), excellent customer service and a strong senior team, all on a mission from dog. PJ studied dog behavior and psychology and trained with a protégé of Cesar Milan. It was then she recognized the need for education. Pj learned of Pat Shipman who concluded that “humans' comparative evolutionary fitness owes itself to the domestication of dogs.” Life changed when PJ read the book "Lost Dogs" by Jim Gorman and learned about the little red dog who was killed because she didn’t want to fight. PJ knew she had to form her own rescue and pay homage to The Little Red Dog. PJ started TLRD with family for volunteers and the desire to make the world a better place. TLRD provides support in a range of areas including safety, health, and exercise to ensure enrichment. TLRD has trained over 500 volunteers and 150 fosters. Most importantly, TLRD has rescued and adopted out nearly 4,000 dogs, and trains and educates the adopters as well. PJ has said that her work has affected her in many ways. Every day she sees the worst in people, and the horrors of the neglected dogs, but she also sees the best in people, and it gives PJ hope for humanity. PJ has learned that dogs have a great capacity to forgive and love, and she understands how they helped humans evolve. PJ understands the connection that people have with dogs. The volunteers and the dogs have taught PJ so much; being patient when working with dogs is a must. Pj has said that through the work of TLRD, PJ has become a better communicator, a better leader, more patient, and more passionate than ever before. PJ is very thankful to have this experience.
