The Tustin Police Department Santa Sleigh is one of the city's most enduring traditions, bringing holiday cheer, lights, and community connection directly to residential doorsteps every December. How the Program Works Originally handcrafted in 1998 by Master Reserve Officer George Vallevieni, the program transforms a customized trailer into an illuminated winter wonderland complete with garland, flying reindeer, holiday music, and Santa and Mrs. Claus. Citywide Coverage: Over roughly two weeks (12–14 nights) leading up to Christmas Eve, the Sleigh navigates more than 90% of Tustin’s neighborhoods, from historic Old Town to Tustin Ranch. Police Escort & Advance Team: Each evening starting around 5:00 PM, a lead patrol vehicle travels ahead, playing holiday music and announcing Santa’s arrival over the loudspeaker so families can step outside. Curbside Visits: At designated stops on each street, children and families line up to meet Santa, share wish lists, take photos, and receive candy canes. Community Impact: More Than a Holiday Visit 1. A Generational Neighborhood Tradition Having run for over 25 years, the Sleigh has engaged tens of thousands of children. It has become a multi-generational staple where parents who greeted the Sleigh during their own childhoods now bring their children out to the curb. 2. Humanizing Law Enforcement For many young residents, the Santa Sleigh is their very first interaction with a police officer. Meeting first responders in a joyous, approachable environment helps replace fear or unfamiliarity with trust, demonstrating that officers are protectors and caring members of the neighborhood.3. Volunteer-Driven Unity The operation relies entirely on volunteer dedication. TPD officers, civilian staff, Explorers, and community leaders donate their personal off-duty hours to drive the escort trucks, manage routes, illuminate photos, and hand out treats. 4. Neighborhood Inclusivity By traveling directly through residential cul-de-sacs, apartment communities, and main avenues, the program ensures holiday magic is accessible to all families regardless of transportation or financial circumstances. Sustaining the Legacy Because the original wooden sleigh has served the community for decades, the Tustin Police Foundation is spearheading a $100,000 capital campaign to engineer and build a brand-new, modern sleigh. This project ensures the vehicle meets modern safety standards, incorporates upgraded lighting and audio systems, and keeps this beloved tradition rolling through Tustin streets for the next generation.
