Cheri Harris Dental Center
Low Cost Dental Clinic The Dental Center provides low-cost dental care for low-income families in our communities. We provide general and preventive dentistry, plus orthodontic and endodontic programs for patients of all ages. Our staff of general dentists, orthodontists, and a hygienist provides professional care and are assisted by paid office staff and trained member volunteers. Our office manager is fluent in Spanish. Proceeds from our Thrift Shop and Treasures on Consignment, general fundraising, grants, and memorial contributions provide the funding to operate the Dental Center. Our Dental Center has served the community since 1957.
• Children develop positive attitudes toward oral health and learn lifelong preventive care habits, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits.
• Families gain access to essential dental services they otherwise could not afford, reducing financial stress and improving overall household well-being.
• Early detection and treatment of dental problems prevent more serious and costly conditions in the future.
Operation School Bell®
Since 1992, Operation School Bell provides new uniforms, books and essentials at no cost to Newport-Mesa Unified School District elementary students of low-income families. In 2018, the program was expanded to include AL’S Closet using aged out clothing from our Thrift Shop. Portable closets are available at select schools with non-uniform clothing for older elementary, middle and high school students at no cost.
• Students arrive at school with appropriate clothing and footwear, increasing their comfort, confidence, and readiness to learn.
• Families experience reduced financial strain as essential clothing and school items are provided at no cost.
• Early identification of basic needs allows schools and community partners to better support at-risk students and families.
• The community benefits from strengthened educational outcomes and increased equity for low-income students.
The Kids on the Block
The Kids on The Block puppet shows, presented by teen and adult members, consist of child-sized puppets who deliver lessons on social issues and nutrition. The puppet shows are shared at local schools and YMCA programs.
• Students demonstrate increased understanding and empathy toward individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental differences.
• Children show improved attitudes and reduced stigma toward peers with disabilities or unique challenges.
• Students are better able to recognize and appreciate diversity in their school and community environments.
• Classroom discussions following presentations reflect increased awareness of inclusion, kindness, and respect.
Higher Education Scholarship Program
Higher education scholarships are awarded to deserving Newport-Mesa Unified School District seniors. Applications and criteria are made available in January.
• Students demonstrate effective use of financial support to reduce educational barriers, including decreased need for additional employment or loan reliance, as reported through student surveys or financial aid records.
• Scholarship recipients engage in campus and/or community involvement activities that support personal growth, leadership development, and career readiness, as documented through self-reports or institutional verification.
