College Bound and Girls Meet the Workforce

The College Bound and Girls Meet the Workforce programs were created to empower girls to graduate on time, go on to higher education, and seek rewarding careers that will provide self-sufficiency. College Bound/Externships = college readiness, life skills, workforce readiness, externships, health and wellness, and leadership and advocacy. College Readiness High school course planning Scholarship research Financial aid research FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application completion College admission testing preparation Individual and group mentoring College visits Life Skills Learning to navigate gender discrimination Health and Wellness (including exercise, nutrition education, prevention of risky behaviors, and techniques to deal with stress) Building healthy and safe relationships Self and Community Advocacy (new) Workforce Readiness Resume creation Career panels Career exploration exercises Mock interviews Public speaking Professional etiquette and dress Workplace tours Summer one-on-one career mentorships The program will serve underserved high school girls, reaching as many as 500 girls in 2023. Many of these are also involved in the College Bound component as well. Girls can participate in the program for two years with one summer mentorship experience. Outcomes

(1) 85% of participants will demonstrate knowledge of career planning

(2) 85% of participants will demonstrate knowledge of college planning requirements and preparation for post-secondary education

(3) 85% of participants will demonstrate knowledge of financial resources for post-secondary education

In 2023:

(1) 83% of College Bound participants plan to declare a STEM major
(2) In 2022-2023, 100% of senior were accepted to institutions of higher education
(3) Girls earned $271,000 from our national organization and local Girls Inc. scholarship supporters
(4) 56% of participants will be the first in their families to go to college.
(5) Participants received 795 college acceptances
(6) Over 100 girls were placed into a summer externship with one of 27 Orange County corporation/organization.

Eureka!

Eureka! was created to motivate and get middle school and high girls excited about STEM subjects. Eureka! kicks off in the summer with a four week-160 hour, all day program, on a college campus, that focuses on health and wellness, STEM, and life skills (economic literacy, resiliency, advocacy, and personal safety). The STEM component of the program makes up 50% of the overall programming. Eureka! takes place on a college campus and has been hosted at various universities in Orange County including: Santa Ana College, Golden West College, and Orange Coast College. Additional activities have taken place at the University of California at Irvine and Chapman University. Program Goals - The key goals of Eureka! are: 1. Increase awareness and interest in STEM-focused careers and learn about a wide variety of careers 2. Demonstrate improved outlook and confidence towards school/academic achievement 3. Increase ability to practice and use life skills including collaborative learning, planning and problem solving 4. Gain workforce readiness skills In 2023, Eureka! expanded to two locations including Orange Coast College and Samueli Academy.

Outcomes

Measurable Outcomes:

1) 87% of participants demonstrated positive interest and attitudes towards STEM

2) 93% of participants increased awareness and interest in STEM-focused careers and non-traditional career options for women

3) 85% of participants increased their ability to practice and use life skills including collaborative learning, planning and problem-solving

4) 89% of participants increased knowledge of science, technology and engineering, including concepts to design and program robotics (Pre-test 34%)
