Polonia Montañez Narrative & Sensory Butterfly Garden Expansion
In partnership with the City of San Juan Capistrano, this capital improvement project expands the existing butterfly gardens at Los Rios Park within the historic Montañez Adobe gardens. The project transforms the area into an inclusive, interactive educational space that weaves together ecological conservation and local ethno-cultural history. Key components include: The Curandera Narrative & Ethnobotany: Replicating the flora used by Polonia Montañez (SJC’s first medicine woman) for local mission tribes, pairing native host plants with medicinal herbs like White Sage, California Sagebrush, and Narrowleaf Milkweed which also attract butterflies and provides habitats. Sensory Signage: Weather-resistant, accessible displays featuring raised lettering, Braille, and integrated QR codes for auditory storytelling. Habitat Restoration: Planting native host and nectar flora to boost local butterfly and pollinator populations. As this is a shared cost project for City of San Juan Capistrano and Goin Native the breakdown of costs is based on the following percentages: 35%: Site Preparation, ADA-accessible pathways, and irrigation upgrades. 25%: Sourcing native plants, medicinal herbs, and habitat materials. 25%: Sensory signage fabrication, Braille elements, and audio hosting. 15%: Educational toolkits, workshop materials, and community outreach
Infrastructure Completion in 2027/2028. Successful installation of the expanded footprint, ADA paths, and sensory signage under city guidelines.
Community Engagement: Increased educational reach tracked via guided tours, K-12 field trips, and audio narrative with headphones in several languages and QR code scans.
Ecological Impact: Measurable increase in native plant biodiversity and local pollinator/butterfly populations.
Cultural Preservation: Enhanced public awareness and preservation of Polonia Montañez’s healing legacy and early tribal ethnobotany.
Wellgardens K-12 School Garden Intiative with Rady Children Health
Administered by Goin Native Therapeutic Gardens, the Wellgardens School Program delivers a critical "nature prescription" directly to Orange County youth. This initiative focuses on building therapeutic and educational green spaces within local K-12 schools, transforming campus environments into interactive living classrooms. To scale our proven model, Goin Native is expanding operations to design, construct, and implement 10 new school gardens per year. Each site serves as a vital anchor for student wellness, combining hands-on environmental education with holistic mental and emotional health support. Cost Breakdown Per Garden Site ($30,000.00):Garden Infrastructure & Builds (67%): $20,000.00 allocated for site preparation, raised planter beds, nutrient-rich soil, irrigation setup, native flora, and sustainable gardening tools. Dedicated Project Management (17%): $5,000.00 for expert design oversight, contractor coordination, and horticulturist scheduling. Curriculum & Materials (16%): $5,000.00 for K-12 educational toolkits, therapeutic supplies, and specialized workshop programming.
