Capital Campaign Purpose:
Hart Community Homes is expanding access to safe and supportive housing for transitional age youth, ages 18-25, including those aging out of government care. In May 2024, we secured a $4 million grant from CalOptima to add housing units on our existing apartment property on Lemon Ave. in Fullerton. The project will result in 20 semi-independent apartments on property owned by Hart Community Homes which will provide housing for up to 30 individuals. The property is located next door to Monkey Business Café where residents can gain paid work experience and is walking distance to Fullerton College. This project will assist at-risk youth and non-minor dependents by providing a continuum of services in order to prevent homelessness while promoting self-sufficiency, stability and successful integration in the community.
Property Description
The housing project will tear down an existing 1940s apartment bldg that has five 2-BR units and add 15 new units for a total of 20 units (a mix of studio and 2 BR) to house 30 residents. The building will include a community room for training and workshops and a community kitchen for classes and events. There will be fitness area and a roof top garden. There will be office space for staff. The facility will be constructed with energy saving elements and landscaped with wise water elements. It is immediately next door to Monkey Business Cafe for paid job training.
Funding
In May 2024, through its Housing and Homelessness Incentive Program (HHIP), CalOptima awarded Hart Community Homes $4 million to build housing for 30 residents. This grant represents approximately 80% of funding needed to complete the home. We are projecting a need for an additional $1 million in funding.
