Background Statement
The Norooz Clinic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit mental health clinic located in Santa Ana, CA. The services we offer include individual, couples, and family therapy, psychological assessments, free peer support groups, EMDR services for trauma, community education & advocacy, graduate and undergraduate internship opportunities, and virtual reality (VR) therapy. If clients don't have the insurance we take, we also provide services on a sliding-scale and offer pro-bono sessions via our Therapy Scholarship Program.
Impact Statement
The mission of Norooz Clinic Foundation is to dismantle barriers to mental health for Orange County's low-income and underrepresented minority residents of all ages with direct mental health services, by utilizing culturally competent care and leveraging the latest technology in mental health treatment. We remove the barriers to accessing mental health by taking insurance, maintaining sliding-scale fees, and offering pro-bono therapy sessions.
Needs Statement
Access to affordable mental health resources is a rising issue and a cause for concern. Currently, 6.7% of residents in Orange County reported having psychological distress (OCHA, 2019). Among low-income and minority communities, even more, unreported mental health disparities exist. The current healthcare system in Orange County admits to long wait times and a lack of mental health professionals to meet the demand (OCHA 2019). Compounding this fact is that at least 8%, or roughly 264,000, of the population in Orange County, do not have medical insurance (CHCF, 2021). Other barriers that add to inaccessibility for low-income and minority populations include prohibitive costs, lack of reliable transportation, and the stigma that goes with utilizing mental health resources. (SSMPH 2021). National Alliance of Mental Illness of California states, “Without treatment, the consequences of mental illness for the individual and society are staggering. Untreated mental health conditions can result in unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide, and poor quality of life.” In 2022, there were 25 suicide fatalities per month in Orange County. (OHCA 2023)
