Background Statement
As one of the first hospitals in Orange County, Providence St. Joseph Hospital has been setting the gold standard for health care since September 1929. Our dedication to clinical excellence and compassionate patient-centered care has put Providence St. Joseph Hospital in the forefront of both medical innovation and medical triumph. Our commitment to provide the best health care for people who live and work in Orange County is woven into our history.
Providence St. Joseph Hospital is a nationally recognized, 463-bed, not-for-profit hospital that is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and designated as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence. With more than 80 specialty programs, a reputation for clinical excellence and compassion, and a healing environment that is focused on treating the whole person - body, mind and spirit - it's easy to see why patients from all over the United States choose Providence St. Joseph Hospital for their health care needs.
Providence St. Joseph Hospital depends on philanthropic support from the community to carry out its mission to care for the medically underserved. Through community outreach programs we're able to provide quality health care services to the most vulnerable members of our local communities and empower them to take steps to improve their own health. Our fixed-site clinic, La Amistad de Jose Family Health Center and our Puente a La Salud Mobile Community Clinics provide services for low-income families to help them overcome the socioeconomic barriers to access the healthcare that they need.
Impact Statement
As one of the largest and busiest hospitals in Orange County, we offer a comprehensive range of services for the treatment of complex medical conditions in a variety of specialties. In 2022, we provided care to over 20,000 inpatient admissions, nearly 400,000 outpatient visits, 82,000 Emergency Department visits, over 11,000 surgeries, over 4,400 births, and provided over $78 million in Community Benefits to our community.
We consistently achieve numerous recognitions each year. For example, U.S. News & World Report recently named us a Top Hospital in Maternity for the second year in a row. In 2023, Women’s Choice Award named us one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience. In 2021, St. Joseph achieved our fourth recognition as a Magnet® Hospital recognizing nursing excellence, a feat accomplished by fewer than 2% of hospitals nationwide.
Needs Statement
Improving the health of our communities is foundational to our Mission and deeply rooted in our heritage and purpose. Our Mission calls us to be steadfast in serving all, with a special focus on our most economically poor and vulnerable neighbors. This core belief drives the programs we build, investments we make, and strategies we implement.
Knowing where to focus our resources starts with our Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), an opportunity in which we engage the community every three years to help us identify and prioritize the most pressing needs, assets, and opportunities. As a result of our 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment and through a prioritization process aligned with our Mission, resources, and hospital strategic plan, the top priorities of our community benefit efforts are:
• Access to Care;
• Mental Health and Substance Use; and
• Affordable Housing.
Just as every moment matters in life, you matter to us. We are grateful for the partnership you share with us in caring for our Dear Neighbor, just as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange have done since the hospital first opened in September 1929. By supporting the Innovating for a Healthier Community comprehensive campaign, your gift will help fund the care that our patients need now. A gift of any amount makes an impact and provides peace of mind for someone who needs health services.
Geographic Areas Served
We serve all of Orange County, with concentrated efforts in Central Orange County. Our service area of Central Orange County includes a population of nearly 2.6 million residents. Approximately 47% of this population resides in a designated "high need" area, characterized by lower life expectancy at birth, reduced high school graduation rates, and a higher prevalence of households with income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), as compared to other areas in the county. To put this in context, in 2020, an annual household income of $52,400 or less was considered at or below 200% FPL for a family of four. In these households, residents frequently face tough choices, such as allocating their limited resources among utilities, rent, groceries, medicine, and other essential expenses to make ends meet.
Top Three Populations Served
- Latinos
- Asian Americans Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders (AANHPI)
