Strength In Scarves
OUR STORY
Inspired by survivors, we give our support to those who have been victims of domestic violence through gifts of hand-knitted and crocheted items.
Mission Statement
Inspired by survivors, we give our support to those who have been victims of domestic violence through gifts of hand-knitted and crocheted items.
Background Statement
Strength in Scarves was inspired by the survivors of domestic violence. In particular, a friend close to the founders and current board members opened her story to share that she had been a victim of domestic violence and how she was working through her healing process. Because some survivors have trepidation with physical contact, we viewed scarves, blankets and shawls as a way to give a "hug" without direct physical contact. So, Strength in Scarves was created. In the first year, we gifted 160 items to a well established organization in Orange County, and they shared our "hugs" with their domestic violence clients. To date, we have shared love and support over 5000 survivors. Many survivors reach out to these organizations with merely the clothes on their backs. Our items are hand made with these elderly, women, teens, children in mind, and it is our way of giving them our support.
Impact Statement
Our organization names stems from the thought that scarves are symbols of strength, warmth, security and comfort. Whether to help encourage confidence by covering physical wounds or to help build self-esteem through the symbolism of strength, these scarves can be worn by victims as a reminder that they are not alone; that the suffering can be stopped. Our gifts are meant to express love and support as survivors build their strength in surviving their struggles.
Needs Statement
The purpose of Strength in Scarves is to support survivors of domestic violence through hand-knitted and -crocheted items. We work closely with well established organizations, which are helping those surviving from domestic violence, and in some cases, work with individuals who can benefit from one of our gifts. Our needs include monetary donations, volunteers, materials, and hand-knitted and hand-crocheted items.
Geographic Areas Served
Domestic violence affects all races, ethnicities, socio-economic statuses and education levels. Therefore, our organization is only limited by the number of donations we receive and wishes to serve as many adults and children survivors as we can.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director
Survivors of domestic violence are inspirational. Some statistics estimate that one in four woman will experience domestic violence, that one in three teenage girls will experience some form of domestic violence, and that a woman is beaten every seven seconds. These estimates are tragic. Perhaps just as tragic, these survivors are often made to feel alone. Although there have been great strides in increasing awareness, the support needed to help survivors can always be stronger. Strength in Scarves wants to do their small part in sharing "hugs" with these amazing individuals. We want them to feel that there are people supporting them and sending them a collective strength to empower them in their struggle for a life without violence.
