Background Statement

Co-Founders and Co-Executive Directors Jessica Mathon and Jennifer Schilling started Walk Intuit when they decided to create a new model of mental health care that serves the whole person and combines evidence-based modalities with complementary therapies, ensuring a highly personalized and effective outcome. Jennifer Schilling has worked in mental health treatment for adolescents, where she witnessed inhumane and retraumatizing treatment. She decided she would better serve by helping one teen at a time and became a licensed therapeutic foster parent. After 8 years of fostering and 2 years of crisis line work, she had learned to hold people compassionately, honoring their worth and potential. She set out to become a licensed therapist with high hopes of creating a safe community and healing sanctuary.
When Jessica Mathon was 26, her brother killed 3 people in a drunk driving accident. At the same time, she was in various parts of Africa, working with traumatized human and wildlife communities. She witnessed alcohol and drugs being used to cope with horrific situations around the world, but in Africa, she also saw ways that people were held safely within their communities. This was such a contrast to what she had experienced in America, and it propelled her into an ongoing exploration of individual and communal ways of healing. This drive to find the best practices to create a new system focused on honoring the individual while being held by community, brought her to create Walk Intuit.

Impact Statement

Our top accomplishments of the past year: Organizational: in 2023-24 we have focused on Board and organizational development for grant-readiness and long-term sustainability; Goal for next year in this area is to regularly submit well-researched letters of interest to potential grantors, and to conduct business planning which includes a timeline for seeking our own property for equine and other therapies and retreats, as our largest expense is facility rental and transport fees for our horses. Programs: approximately 600 support-group sessions have been held Jan-Aug 2024 and our goal for 2025 is to hold 900 support group sessions. In 2023 we provided over $130,000 of fee reduction for services, and our goal by year-end of 2024 is to have provided over $150,000 of fee reduction for services. January-May of 2024 we started therapy services with 324 new clients - our goal in this area for 2025 is to start services with 500 new clients.

Needs Statement

Our most pressing need is to 1.) locate a long-term lease or lease with option to buy, on a property which can house our equine therapy operations as well as office-based therapy, fundraising events, and retreats. This will significantly reduce our monthly expenses and increase our income. 2.) Following that, we have a strong need for significant fundraising as we finish a capacity-building grant, which has provided a portion of salary for our development staff person and activities. 3.) Having the skills and guidance of a qualified bookkeeper or accountant will enable us to expand our expertise in financial planning, forecasting, and reporting. 4.) The purchase of licensing for a comprehensive nonprofit CRM will enable us to more effectively manage and seek donations, relationships with donors and supporters, special events, outreach, and grants. 5.) A subscription to a high-level grants database will streamline our research and applications process.
