Mission Statement

The mission of Age Well Senior Services is to provide resources for older adults to promote their vitality and support their independence.

Background Statement

Age Well began as a small non-profit in the city of San Clemente in 1975. Our Home Delivered Meals program began in 1980, and our Care Management program began in 1984. We grew to become a regional provider of community-based services for seniors throughout south Orange County. Age Well assumed responsibility for Title III programs in the City of Irvine in January 2022, representing a significant expansion of services.

Impact Statement

Goal: Enable our senior participants to live with independence and dignity in their own homes.

Objective: Reduce hunger and food insecurity for seniors with an emphasis on the frail elderly age 80 and over who are managing multiple chronic health conditions.

Activities: Stage, pack, and deliver meals each weekday to homebound seniors via scheduled routes within each community.

Timeline: Ongoing

Evaluation: Age Well conducts an annual survey of Meals on Wheels participants. The survey is developed in cooperation with and approved by the Orange County Office on Aging and is administered by Age Well staff and volunteers. The results guide menu preparation, ensure nutritional needs are met, and inform health and nutrition outcomes. Our target is for 75 percent of respondents to report that the Meals on Wheels program mitigates food insecurity and helps them live independently in their own homes. The seniors who responded to Age Well's 2025 MOW participant survey say the program helps them live independently in their own homes (93%), helps them manage health conditions (90%), and helps improve their physical health (80%).

Needs Statement

The need for Meals on Wheels is great, even in affluent Orange County. Feeding America reports that 11.4 percent of Orange County seniors were food insecure in 2023, meaning they have limited access to enough food due to lack of money. This suggests that more than 22,000 of our service area's nearly 200,000 seniors may be food insecure. Three-quarters (75%) of seniors who responded to our 2025 annual survey said they would not have enough food to eat if the Meals on Wheels program was not available. Meals on Wheels improves the health and well-being of older adults, particularly those who receive meals daily and those who live alone. In addition to healthy food, regular visits from volunteers provide safety checks and alleviate isolation.
