PROGRAMS
Escalera STEM
AltaMed's Escalera STEM program, an affiliate of Unidos US, is a national, evidence-based, after-school model that promotes economic mobility for Latino youth by increasing their educational attainment, career planning, and access to advanced careers. Escalera STEM helps Latino youth graduate from high school, prepare for college, and make informed plans for their careers. Escalera STEM addresses the main barriers that negatively affect the Latino STEM pipeline: lack of awareness and exposure to STEM education. Escalera STEM is composed of modules that include STEM career projections, Latinos in STEM, la familia in the college-going process, girls in STEM, aspirations versus reality, and STEM panels, in addition to a program culmination event when the program ends in 2 years. The program begins in junior year and ends at high school graduation. In 2021, the next cohort of students will consist of 125 juniors and seniors from three high schools: Roosevelt, South East, and South Gate.
AltaMed's program will address the problem of barriers to success in school for students from a high-risk population, and help program participants succeed in high school and pursue post-secondary education. AltaMed's program will help Los Angeles area youth graduate from high school, enroll in post-secondary education, and find rewarding STEM careers, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty and achieve career success. This rigorous program is designed to give underserved students the guidance necessary to succeed in school and remove the barriers preventing them from pursuing STEM careers. Academic milestones to occur include increased GPAs and number of scholarships awarded to students.

AltaMed deploys routine HIV testing across its over 40 primary care clinics since 2013 and screens over 30,000/year among its general patient population. Established as a leader in HIV biomedical prevention targeting Latinos, AltaMed served as principal organizer of a 2014 PrEPárate Summit which educated Latino providers on PrEP use and culturally-competent access. AltaMed provides comprehensive primary health care and support services in an outpatient setting for people living with HIV (PLWH) including: early intervention services such as HIV counseling and testing; monitoring of disease progression; treatment of HIV; diagnosis and treatment of related infections; and case management and benefits assistance to support PLWH. Annual patients served (Medical): 2,007; Annual patients served (Prevention): 7,158.
Historically, AltaMed has been a provider-of-choice among the Latino population in Los Angeles and Orange Counties—for primary care services for the general population as well as for HIV prevention and medical care services. With over 30 years of experience addressing HIV in predominantly Latino communities, AltaMed also continues to serve a diverse patient population, including African-Americans. As part of its PrEP provider video series, AltaMed produced and launched its Kiki n’ Brunch video short to raise awareness of PrEP among black MSM. AltaMed followed this up with its Fierce video shorts to engage black and Latina transgender women. Finally, later this month, AltaMed will release its Free to Be Sexual Health Campaign, a first-of-its-kind campaign inclusive of gay men of color (Black and Latino) to
normalize and de-stigmatize same-sex relationships.
