Financial Assistance and Navigation for Breast Cancer Patients

BCS’ program goal is to enable access to treatment for Orange County breast cancer patients through three key components: - Community Resource Navigation: At first contact from clients (referral from medical facility/partner agency or self-referred), program staff conducts intake and needs assessment. Staff Program Navigators connect clients with supportive resources they may not know how to access. - Financial Assistance: Clients in need of financial assistance submit an application, intake survey, treatment verification (by medical provider), and financial summary. Program Navigators conduct phone interviews to verify financial need, treatment barriers/duration, and prepare an assistance recommendation tailored to the clients’ needs to provide to our Application Review Panel (ARP). Following ARP approval, assistance is disbursed monthly. Volunteer Support Navigators conduct monthly client need assessments and confirm use of financial assistance. Maximum lifetime support is $6,000; annual allocation is based on our budget (typically $1,000-1,500). - Professional and Peer Support: Our program team provides extensive, individualized social and mental health support. Many clients’ journeys are compounded by life challenges, including divorce/custody, employment, legal disputes, and more. Clients can always access BCS with questions, concerns, or to simply connect with a caring team. Higher-risk clients work with our bilingual Client Advocate (Marriage and Family Therapist, MFT) for professional mental health assessment/support and referrals.

Outcomes

Throughout 28 years serving Southern California, our program outcomes have included:
• increased access to breast cancer treatment;
• increased adherence to treatment;
• reduced psychological distress for the clients and their families;
• avoidance of long-term (post-treatment) financial distress.

BCS is the only organization of its kind available to help breast cancer patients by providing sustained financial support coupled with essential community-based navigation to provide safety net for preventing financial crisis resulting from a medical crisis. Addressing our vision of a community with full access to breast cancer treatment, our organization defines long-term success as being able to serve all who seek our assistance. Our program enables breast cancer patients to access their care, prevents long-term financial and psychological distress, and offers reliable and compassionate wrap-around navigation at a critical point of the continuum of care in cancer treatment. Program success is measured through intake assessment, program evaluation surveys, and client data tracking.
