Leonard Cancer Institute
The Judi and Bill Leonard Institute for Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Wellness has established a place of new possibilities, hope and healing for south Orange County. By providing the best in personalized cancer treatments in our community, the Leonard Cancer Institute ensures local access to highly specialized care. Our comprehensive cancer center brings together specialists, clinical trials, and cutting-edge technology to compassionately care for the body, mind and spirit of our patients and family members. The philanthropic support of our community is helping to ensure that our program will include multi-disciplinary treatments, unique to each patient's tumor, cancer type and genetics. Our distinctive integration of care and personal navigation for each patient is defined by a holistic, mindful experience and sacred embrace.
Advanced technologies will enable us to transform the status quo in cancer care, leading patients to more personalized and accurate treatment plans, while enabling physicians to do their jobs more effectively. Robotic surgical technology has also advanced rapidly allowing surgeons to operate on tumors in early stages or tumors in close proximity to sensitive organs without damaging healthy tissue.Essential members of our multi-disciplinary care team, nurse navigators partner with our patients to guide them throughout their treatment. Our dedicated nurse navigators work to ensure care is coordinated among each member of the cancer care team and they serve as reassuring advocates for patients. By forming alliances with leading cancer institutions across the country we will bring the best in academic medicine and clinical trials to our south Orange County community. These invaluable partnerships will unveil new innovative treatment options and provide our patients with the best possible outcomes. By giving patients access to a broad range of proven therapies, we provide them more control over their own destinies. Our programs incorporate body, mind and spirit care, including integrative medicine and natural treatments such as acupuncture, massage and yoga that reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall well-being. It is essential for patients to try to consume a healthy diet and to drink nourishing beverages. Since sometimes that is easier said than done, we have a team of registered dieticians available to work one-on-tone with patients and families to develop nutrition goals and a plan to achieve them.

Mental Health and Wellness Institute
Providence Mission Hospital created the Clinical Institute for Mental Health and Wellness. With philanthropic support from our community, Mission Hospital is expanding our Mental Health and Wellness programs and services. One element of our comprehensive enhancement plan is to create a dual-diagnosis mental health unit. This highly specialized unit will care for patients who require hospital care for psychiatric and substance use issues, and will also provide support to their families. Dual-diagnosis recovery blends the most successful aspects of mental health care and substance abuse treatments. This will be the only dual-diagnosis unit in Orange County, and one of the few across the state and country. This innovative program truly represents Mission Hospital’s commitment to the highest level of advanced, compassionate care.
Our accrued understanding of the genetics and genomics of mental disorders has opened up new exciting perspectives in the domain of what is commonly referred to as precision or personalized medicine. The current practice in choosing medications to treat mental disorders is primarily by trial and error, and is not based on an individual’s biological and genetic characteristics. To improve such a poor “trial and error” practice, we can easily implement a gene-based, algorithm-guided test to aid in medication choice, as well as in profiling our patients to predict their response to a given treatment or to prevent developing unwanted side-effects from the not optimal medication.
This path-breaking innovation is also highly supported by the State of California that has launched the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine, which is supporting initial demonstration projects related to cancer, cardiovascular events, Multiple Sclerosis and Infectious Disorders.
In our Clinical Institute for Mental Health and Wellness, we can expand a precision medicine approach to improve the treatment of our patients and promote mental health in the community.
