Serving Kids Hope
OUR STORY
Our program started as a pilot in 2002, called Dr. Riba's Health Club (DRHC) by a pediatrician at a community clinic who assembled a team to treat children with obesity. This team quickly learned that trauma and psycho-social and emotional factors contributed to obesity and counting calories and controlling portions only worsens the problem. The project expanded in 2008 through funding from First 5 OC under a fiscal sponsorship and in 2015 Serving Kids Hope (SKH), a 501c3 was founded. SKH allows this team to deliver care throughout the county for those who are uninsured or underinsured for disease prevention and treatment.
In 2016-17, data for individual care demonstrated a 91% success rate for obesity. In 2017 DRHC began group care through a partnership with CalOptima, and the first year collected data on 900 patients in Santa Ana showing statistically significant improvements (p<0.000).
Mission Statement
Serving Kids Hope's mission is to empower children, families, and communities in overcoming medical, nutritional, social, economic, behavioral, and environmental barriers to achieve healthier lives through medical care, mental health care and educational programs.
Our Vision is to inspire a healthier generation of children.
Our Values:
Caring: Serving families who are often left behind.
Compassion: Meeting people where they are.
Hope: Empowering families to build healthier futures.
Background Statement
Serving Kids Hope began with a mission to promote health and wellness for children and families. Over time, we recognized the deep connection between physical health, mental health, and the challenges families face in their daily lives. Today, our focus has expanded to support both mental and behavioral health, while continuing to fight childhood obesity and against Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
Too often, vulnerable families — including children with special needs, new immigrants, and those experiencing food insecurity — are left out of traditional care. Barriers such as cultural stigma, language differences, and limited access prevent families from receiving the support they need. We exist to close those gaps, bringing culturally relevant, bilingual, and family-friendly resources directly into trusted spaces through partnerships.
Impact Statement
Serving Kids Hope is transforming the way communities support children and families:
Reaching Families Where They Are:
In Orange County, Serving Kids Hope acts as a vital safety-net for children facing nutritionally based issues, usually obesity, and often compounded by trauma, behavioral, medical, and socio-economic conditions. We strive to support not only these vulnerable children, but also equip and strengthen those who are caring for and influencing them (parents, siblings, grandparents, schools, and providers). We value collaboration within our team and with community partners to deliver high quality medical, mental, and nutritional health services to meet the needs of the whole person. Trust is an essential core value central to creating an environment infused with integrity, reliability, and safety.
'Being Healthy from A to Z' is an 8-tier integrated model targeting the root causes of pediatric mortality. In a world shaped by the collision of obesity and COVID-19, our program provides the prevention and early intervention children need to build resilience. We focus on upstream habits to protect their physical, social, and academic health from the county level to the state."
Needs Statement
Children with obesity and growing up with ACEs have 18 and 20 year decreases, respectfully, in life-expectancy. Overweight/Obesity and ACEs have a prevalence in children of approximately 30% each. Both of these conditions are in higher racial minorities, those living in poverty, and those with special needs. Through every child served, every family engaged, and every partnership forged, we are bridging the health equity gap and building a resilient future for all.
Being Healthy from A to Z is intended to engage, inspire, and instill “Healthy Habits” through engaging content in young children upstream in their lives and support their families, neighborhoods, support systems, caregivers, schools, medical providers, and ultimately their communities to germinate and grow these habits for a lifetime.
