Serving People In Need
OUR STORY
Our mission is to restore Orange County's families & individuals in crises to self-sufficiency. At Serving People in Need, we are working to end homelessness in our community.
SPIN was founded in 1987 by Sam Boyce and five friends who felt compelled to help the homeless of Orange County. Each week, they passed out food and asked questions, trying to determine what had brought so many to these circumstances. Time and time again, the volunteers received the same responses: “I lost my job and couldn’t pay the rent, so I was evicted,” or “Even though I have a job, I cannot get the money together to pay the move-in costs for housing.” "I have no family, no friends, no support system at all." Today, as housing prices continue to rise, the need for access remains high. Since 2022, housing requests within the county have increased by over 53,000 (161%), and an estimated 400 families remain unhoused at any given time.
At SPIN, we are more committed than ever to helping individuals and families reach self-sufficiency - and our programs work! With access to wrap-around case management, basic needs (clothing, food, hygiene, household), employment and financial education services, each year, over 90% of our clients reach full independence and are able to sustain themselves. Most importantly, that means more children have a safe, secure place to call home where they can thrive.

Background Statement
Serving People in Need, Inc., was founded in 1987 by Sam Boyce. Concerned about the growing population of unhoused in his community, and the challenges and lack of services they faced, he was determined to make an impact. He and a small group of friends delivered meals to the homeless on the streets. Through this, he learned some of the root causes which included high rents, the rising costs of basic needs, and challenging disabling conditions. Mr. Boyce made his nonprofit official in 1989, and two years later, launched two main housing programs, accompanied by extensive support services and case management designed to address the common factors faced by unhoused families and individuals.
