Mission Statement
South Asian Network (SAN) is a community based organization advancing the health, emotional & mental well-being, and civil rights of South Asians in Southern California, focusing on Orange County.
Background Statement
The South Asian Network (SAN) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides culturally and linguistically specific services to and advocacy on behalf of South Asians in Southern California, in the areas of healthcare access, gender-based violence, and civil rights/civic engagement. We were founded in 1990 by a group of activists and volunteers gathered in a living room to address the needs of a rapidly growing community. Over the past 34 years, we have grown to be a fully staffed agency with multilingual staff, representing South Asian countries, and various faith traditions. We have built trust in our community, continuing to provide support to those who often have no place else to turn. Over the last more than three decades, we have served approximately 26,000 women, men, and children. Our vision is that everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, country of origin, gender, faith, or ability in the South Asian community be able to live a life of dignity, and provide a safe, healthy and financially secure future for themselves and their family. We primarily work in Orange and Los Angeles County, serving South Asian religious and community centers, such as the Buena Park Gurdwara, Santa , Garden Grove, Anaheim, and La Habra Mosques as well as other churches and mandirs in the area serving the South Asian community.
Impact Statement
SAN believes in self-sustaining communities who actively raise their voices, take leadership and challenge social injustices, both within and beyond the South Asian community. Given the multiple identities of gender, sexuality, class, religion, ethnicity and language in the diverse South Asian communities, SAN commits to challenging multiple oppressions throughout all its efforts. Starting internally, SAN challenges biases within the South Asian community. Furthermore, SAN works externally to address broader social injustice and build alliances between South Asians and other communities in Southern California and nationally who struggle for long-term social change. The way that we support community members is by providing hate crime education and case management, public benefits and healthcare application assistance, mental health therapy, domestic violence case management, and citizenship and immigration legal services.
