Mission Statement

St. Francis Home provides loving care for 60 elderly women by a holistic, enriched program designed to enhance their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness. As an assisted living facility, the residents are given help with activities of daily living, and assistance in obtaining medical, spiritual, and social services. All faiths and nationalities are welcome. It has been run by the Franciscan Sisters since 1944.

Background Statement

In 1926, five Sisters of St. Francis came to Texas, then Santa Barbara, and finally to Santa Ana to escape religious persecution in Mexico. St. Francis Home started caring for two women and it grew to 12 in 1944. They received a County license on March 24, 1944.   As time went on, the Home kept expanding, adding rooms, then buildings until it reached 66 at the present location in Santa Ana. (The COV-19 reduced the number to 20. It is now taking new residents.) It includes a dining room, chapel, a craft room, and large TV room with piano and large dance floor area for entertainers. Two rooms are available as hair salons. In the backyard, there is a small parking area and on the other side of one wing, there is a green grassy area and a rose garden.

Impact Statement

1. The new logo sign, installed four years ago at the corner of St. Francis Home, is easily seen by all who come to Our Lady of Pilar Church.   2. School & church groups (vaccinated) come to entertain the ladies on Sunday afternoons with singing and dancing. 3. The grounds have been upgraded in the front entrance with new roses and in the backyard a walkway was put in leading to a statue of St. Francis of Assisi. Now the ladies have spacious & lovely grounds to walk in. 4.  Four years ago, the Home received a large donation to repair and install a new dining room flooring.  5.  Our goal is to encourage younger women who can use the stairs to come and choose second floor rooms. (Since there is no elevator.)

Needs Statement

1.  Since the Sisters wanted to serve the very poor,  they often have cared for poor ladies who could not pay the full amount of room fee. Some ladies need help with medical and dental bills, medication, and personal items.
2. The Home needs funds for general upkeep of the Home, such as, painting the chapel, plumbing repairs, etc. So the St. Francis Guild, a volunteer group of 60 years, usually puts on two fundraisers a year to help with the needs of the Home. The neighborhood is not affluent and so the fundraisers only raise around $5 - 6,000.   There is need to subsidize the poor ladies  at $ 30,000 per year. Roof repair, which is close to $ 50,000 is done in sections or as greatly needed. Since the COV-19, they cannot have the Mexican Dinner or Christmas Boutique to protect the residents. So we need the on-line July fundraiser with four other Senior organizations to raise at least $20,000.
3. The Chapel: also needs new flooring and pews repaired.
4. Chairs in TV room need to be re-upholstered.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

St. Francis Home is run by the Franciscan Sisters whose mission is to serve the poor. Their rates are far less than other homes for Seniors. While it is basically Catholic, women from all faiths are welcome. In fact, it was the only Catholic Senior home in Orange County until recently. With the help of the St. Francis Guild, the Home looks very inviting. Most importantly, the Sisters care for the women with great love. The Sisters decorate the dining room according to the season of the year, as July Fourth, Thanksgiving, or Christmas and Easter.

Statement from the Board Chair/President

The Guild tries to help make St. Francis Home look clean and attractive by freshly painting the hallways, putting in new flooring in the hallway and dining room, and making other repairs. The exterior grounds have been upgraded each year. In the back yard there are tables with umbrellas to allow the ladies to enjoy fresh air and the rose garden.
