To protect and preserve the residential and environmental qualities of Newport Beach.

SPON (Stop Polluting Our Newport) was formed 46 years ago by a group of residents that wanted to protect Newport Beach. The organization has now progressed to Still Protecting our Newport in name and purpose. Newport Beach is a target for those who want to protect it, and those who want to simply profit. SPON is made up of educators, city leaders, attorneys, environmental experts and passionate community members. SPON has worked tirelessly to protect open land and habitat, oppose ill-considered development, and preserve the character of our City. SPON ensures the preservation of a healthy environment, open space and the unique character of Newport Beach by activating citizen participation in decisions that affect the environment and residential quality of life.

SPON has a continual need for funds to support the variety of arms that support the organization: Environment and Sustainability, Aviation, Membership, Education and Public Outreach, and legal assistance (when needed). Funds are used to support an active community education program, protection of the City from he effects that John Wayne Airport create on quality of life issues, to produce and inform the community via social media, programs, and monthly newsletters. Housing and land use is another key area of activity that requires financial support. On the hear horizon is the re-negotiation of the l985 Airport Settlement Agreement that will involve SPON's involvement in the form of legal support.

SPON does not have an Executive Director

Under my leadership, and with the help of a supportive Board and active community involvement, I hope to provide the guidance and expertise necessary to support SPON's Strategic Plan, and to have the resources necessary to fully implement that Plan. To that end, I hope to expand the Board and volunteers, and to diversify all levels of the organization. Creating a robust social media presence, implementing a well-defined educational program, and accomplishing this through a repositioned public perception of SPON are my top priorities. This will be done, in part, by partnering with community leaders, groups, business and local government, and to encourage involvement at all levels within our community. Advocacy is a key role to be played.
