PROGRAMS

UCI Eye Mobile For Children

1. Screening and Detection - Visual acuity or sharpness of vision is determined through a screening test administered in classrooms by our Eye Mobile staff. 2. Comprehensive examination and data management for those at risk- Children who are referred from the initial classroom screening are provided results and consent forms. Our staff and teachers educate and encourage parents to fill out consents so children may receive a comprehensive dilated eye exam conducted by a licensed pediatric optometrist on our Eye Mobile. Sub-specialist referrals are given to parents as needed. 3. Treatment, provision of eyewear and monitoring of compliance - We provide prescription eyeglasses to all children who need them, free of charge. All lenses are made of shatterproof material and children get to select their own frames. We personally deliver the eyeglasses to children at their schools. Provision of eyewear only is often insufficient. We have a standard four-week follow up protocol to ensure that children are wearing their new glasses, and that families understand the educational materials provided to them. This follow-up communication is a critical part of our program. During these conversations, we learn more about the challenges that families face in getting children to wear glasses and we work with the families to develop an action plan to increase the compliance rate. Additionally, children who have been prescribed glasses but who are not reaching 20/40 visual acuity or better after wearing their glasses for four to six weeks are treated again by our Eye Mobile staff to ensure improvement in visual acuity is achieved.
