Background Statement

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL) is the nation’s largest legal and civil rights organization for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
Founded in 1983 as the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, AJSOCAL serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year through direct services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and capacity building
AJSOCAL is based in downtown Los Angeles, with offices in Orange County and Sacramento.

Impact Statement

For over 40 years, AJSOCAL has been the region’s leading organization dedicated to providing the growing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities with multilingual, culturally-sensitive legal services, education and civil rights support. Serving more than 15,000 individuals and organizations annually, AJSOCAL’s strategies are four-prong: Direct Services, Impact Litigation, Policy Advocacy, and Capacity Building. Its core programs include Asian Language Legal Intake Project (ALLIP), Citizenship, Immigration, Survivor and Family Empowerment, Demographic Research, Health Access Project (HAP), Education Equity, Immigrant Rights, and Voting Rights. All programs also engage in community education and outreach, technical assistance and capacity building to other organizations; many of its projects, including HAP, also work on policy advocacy to build a strong voice for civil rights and social justice.

Needs Statement

AJSOCAL seeks to strengthen its core, multilingual legal assistance programs and support for victims of anti-Asian discrimination and hate, as well as its policy advocacy and impact litigation efforts across Orange and Los Angeles Counties.
