Mission Statement
BreastfeedLA is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of infants and families through education, outreach, and advocacy to promote and support breast/chestfeeding.
Background Statement
BreastfeedLA is a grassroots coalition formed in 1994 and incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 in September 2001. BreastfeedLA is the only organization of its kind in Los Angeles (LAC) and Orange County (OC) and is governed by a diverse Board of Directors. We address infant feeding equity in LAC and OC through three (3) pillars of change: Education, Outreach, and Advocacy.
Infant feeding equity means every expectant or new parent has access to information, resources, and support that facilitates informed decision-making and the ability to feed their infant in the way they determine is safest, healthiest, and most fitting for their lives.
Impact Statement
BreastfeedLA is a leader in advancing health equity for families through the promotion of breastfeeding, centering marginalized communities, and challenging systemic barriers in perinatal care. Guided by our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we engage in advocacy and education to support families, foster culturally competent care, and create inclusive spaces within the healthcare system. Our work amplifies the voices of the underserved, ensuring all families have access to the support they need for healthier, thriving infants. By investing in the liberation of one another and operationalizing anti-racism, we are transforming maternal health outcomes and empowering communities for lasting generational change. Through excellence, integrity, and service, BreastfeedLA remains dedicated to a future where equitable care and breastfeeding support are accessible to all.
Needs Statement
Despite growing awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, significant disparities persist in access to breastfeeding support, particularly for marginalized communities. Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families face systemic barriers, including inadequate healthcare access, cultural stigmas, and a lack of representation in the lactation workforce. These challenges result in lower breastfeeding initiation and duration rates, contributing to poorer health outcomes for infants and mothers.
BreastfeedLA recognizes the urgent need to address these disparities through culturally competent care, education, and advocacy. Our work is essential to eliminating inequities in perinatal health, fostering inclusive environments, and empowering families to make informed infant feeding decisions. To sustain and expand our impact, we require continued support to deliver high-quality programs, strengthen community partnerships, and advocate for policy changes that prioritize equitable access to breastfeeding support. Investing in BreastfeedLA is an investment in the health and wellbeing of future generations, ensuring that all families, regardless of background, can thrive.
