OUR STORY

To provide nonprofit housing and supported living for  adults with special needs with an emphasis on community.

Mission Statement

To provide nonprofit housing and supported living for  adults with special needs with an emphasis on community.

Background Statement

Glennwood Housing Foundation's (GHF) mission is to provide a loving and unique housing and supportive living community for  adults  with intellectual/developmental disabilities in a community setting that is local, safe, and affordable and promises to enhance the quality of their lives. The mission is guided by a vision where  residents have unsurpassed opportunities for social growth, emotional fulfillment, enhanced dignity and equality through assisted independence. In summer 2013 GHF opened its doors to a 44-room adult residential facility that is home to up to 45 young adults with very diverse developmental disabilities. The community is located at 2130 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach.      Glennwood Housing Foundation, Inc. received full 501 (c) 3 status in 2010. The purpose of this unique program was to move beyond the interaction provided by recreational sports activities and address the social, spiritual and financial needs of this distinctive group of young adults as they mature beyond their teenage years. The organization began as a Community Care Licensing facility number (306004493). Glennwood secured a Regional Center of Orange County vendor contract in 2020 which assists in supporting the direct care staffing services to our residents.

Impact Statement

In 2020 Glennwood was able to secure a contract with Regional Center of Orange County to reimburse supportive staffing payroll expenses. This contract enabled Glennwood to maintain rental costs to families at the current levels and decrease support services costs to families which was a savings of approximately $10,000 annually. In addition, Glennwood successfully initiated policies and procedures to keep residents safe from COVID-19. Policies remain in place today and Glennwood continues to maintain a safe environment for Residents and Staff. Currently there are 45 Residents at Glennwood House Laguna Beach and Glennwood is working with community partners at The Thompson Autism and Neurodevelopmental Center at CHOC to provide additional and much needed assessment services to additional persons in Orange County.

Needs Statement

The goal of Glennwood Housing Foundation is to continue to support, and build partnerships that will increase the quality of life for residents living at Glennwood House of Laguna Beach and to increase the ability for persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities to remove barriers to support services and to increase awareness of the options to meet the needs of each individual person. Glennwood has developed partnerships in Orange County that will be designing a pilot program to provide assessments for families who are seeking both housing and support services. One of the organizations goals remains to retire the mortgage in Laguna Beach, ($5.400,000) thereby ensuring the continuation of not only the Glennwood residence but the ability of Glennwood to be at the forefront of the field in providing supportive living services to the developmentally disabled.   The Glennwood program continues to be chosen as a model for replication and will continue to serve as an advisor to developing programs nationwide. As residents approach their older years and their needs increase Glennwood is looking toward the next step in the continuum of care and supportive services.  The number one concern of parents of the developmentally disabled is whether or not the trust funds established will be sufficient to care for their child throughout his/her life and if their child will have access to continued supportive residential services when they, as parents, are no longer able to care for their child. These long term options for care are of vital importance to the strategic planning currently in process at Glennwood Housing Foundation. The vision for 2025 and onward to to help to create options for families in need and promote independent living for all persons.

Statement from the CEO/Executive Director

The Glennwood program serves a very diverse population of adults with disabilities all with special talents and goals. Through the supportive services and encouragement for independent living Glennwood has been able to watch its Residents grow in their confidence, achieve their dreams and be active and inclusive members of the community both in Laguna and beyond.  As a further testament to their vision the Residents' very own outreach program -" G-Force - Glennwood For Good" continues into 2024-2025 and monthly work with other non-profits and community programs to serve the marginalized and give back to their community.   Glennwood Residents continue to be involved in the local community and remain connected to local non-profits and organizations in Orange County. Their excitement and willingness to learn about cause related projects, keep life positive and support their peers continues daily. I cannot begin to describe the pride with which these amazing adults thread life's challenges and prove to all of us at Glennwood House how forward thinking and hope can guide us all in reaching our goals. The intersection of families and supporters and true pioneers blazing a new trail for independence – that was the brilliance of Glennwood from our inception in August 2013 until today. We are so appreciative for all that has been created through such incredible dedication by our staff, our families, our board of directors and our passionate supporters.

Statement from the Board Chair/President

As a founding Parent and Board Member, myself and my wife, Vinita, have been involved with the special needs community for over 30 years.  My daughter, Lauren, suffered from a birth disability caused by a rare form of cancer tumor. and our family has for many years coached baseball, soccer, and organized a bowling league for special needs children. I am committed to Glennwood being the "model" for future special needs housing projects around the country as the need is tremendous due to a continued shortage of affordable housing and services for the special needs community. We believe in the dignity and the passion of persons with disabilities and our Board of Directors is very committed to ensuring the sustainability of programs like Glennwood House of Laguna Beach.  Each year Glennwood has stayed true to its mission to offer our residents and their families an affordable special community filled with friends and meaningful activities within a safe and professional setting.
