Peer Recovery Support Services
Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) provides a comprehensive array of recovery support services for high-risk individuals struggling with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues, and their families, living in Orange County. Services include screenings and assessments for recovery capital and developing appropriate recovery approaches, leadership/life skills training; peer-to-peer coaching and individual and group support; individualized recovery plans, family education, and additional health/wellness services. Most referral participants for this program come from Recovery Road, a recovery community center (RCC), The Recovery Center, a re-entry recovery program, Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living, a community benefit program of Hoag Hospital, Family Recovery Centers, addiction treatment partners, and other community-based organization. All these organizations are located in Orange County and serve people struggling with SUDs and co-occurring disorders, who are uninsured and dealing with a multitude of high-risk concerns, such as homelessness, incarceration, racial/ethnic diversity, etc.
The Purpose of Recovery (TPOR) launched as a virtual peer-to-peer recovery support organization in October 2020, during the height of the Covid pandemic. In its first two months of operation (November and December of 2020), with two part-time Peer Recovery Support Specialists, TPOR provided 1-on-1 recovery coaching to over a dozen peers. During 2021, TPOR more than tripled its coaching capacity and saw a 600% increase in the number of peers it provided 1-on-1 recovery coaching to. By the end of 2022, TPOR's coaching capacity had grown 500% and experienced a ten-fold increase since its inception in the number of peers receiving 1-on-1 recovery coaching. This represents a thirteen-fold increase in recovery support hours provided from TPOR's inception in 2020 through the end of 2022.
During 2022, TPOR made substantial progress in expanding its Family Peer Recovery support, providing additional training to its existing peer coaches in family peer support, and doubling its number of family peer support coaches. Through its partnerships with community organizations such as the Melinda Hoag Center for Healthy Living in Newport Beach, FOR Families in Irvine, and the Samueli Academy in Santa Ana, TPOR grew its family peer coaching practice from 0% of its peer base in 2021 to 10% in 2022, with even more growth projected in 2023.
Outcomes in 2023 include having acquired four state grants, one Federal grant, hosting the 3rd annual recovery rally with over 350 participants and community partners, obtaining 103 new donors, hosting groups for over 500 people, providing one-on-one peer support to 75 unique individuals, moving and expanding dedicated office space for a staff of 12 team members, launching an internship program for new behavioral health workers, expanding bi-lingual peers support to family members, and conducting community Narcan training and distribution events.
