Pharmacovigilance 2.0: Medication Safety for Older Adults
Pharmacovigilance 2.0 is Veritas Research Foundation’s independent program to detect, confirm, and prevent medication-related harm in older adults. Using Medicare data on nearly 10 million beneficiaries, Phase I studies the 50 oral medications most commonly used in outpatient care. Unlike voluntary reporting systems, the program measures risk in a defined population and produces evidence clinicians and regulators can use to prescribe more safely and label products more accurately. VRF does not accept pharmaceutical industry funding.
A research cohort of 9.8 million older Medicare beneficiaries has already been established, and a pilot study of atorvastatin showed the methods can detect and confirm clinically relevant safety signals. Phase I will evaluate high-use outpatient medications, publish peer-reviewed findings, and provide clinicians, regulators, and patients with quantified risk estimates that can reduce preventable drug-related harm—especially among older, disabled, and dual-eligible adults underrepresented in clinical trials.
